Data Usage Tips
Make every megabyte count
A little setup goes a long way. These habits keep your roaming data lasting longer — so you stay connected for the whole trip without surprise top-ups.
Before you travel
- Download maps offline (Google Maps, Apple Maps) for your destination before takeoff.
- Pre-load playlists, podcasts, and Netflix episodes over Wi-Fi at home or the hotel.
- Update your apps and OS — updates over roaming data burn through your allowance fast.
- Finish any large cloud backups or photo uploads on Wi-Fi before you leave.
Phone settings that save data
- Turn on Data Saver / Low Data Mode in your cellular settings.
- Disable background app refresh for non-essential apps.
- Switch off iCloud / Google Photos auto-backup over cellular.
- Turn off Wi-Fi Assist / Smart Network Switch — it can silently pull roaming data.
Apps that quietly drain data
- Auto-playing videos on social feeds (Instagram, TikTok, X) are the #1 silent drain — disable autoplay.
- Streaming in HD uses ~3GB/hour; cap video apps to SD or lower while roaming.
- Email attachments and group chats with heavy media can rack up usage in the background.
- Cloud drives syncing in the background (Drive, Dropbox) can upload full-resolution photos non-stop.
While roaming
- Grab Wi-Fi at cafes, hotels, and lounges for heavy tasks like video calls and downloads.
- Use messaging apps (WhatsApp, Telegram) over Wi-Fi for calls instead of cellular voice.
- Pause downloads and let them finish on Wi-Fi — most app stores let you queue them.
- Keep an eye on your usage in your phone's cellular settings and reset the counter on arrival.
